Health Insurance Requirements for the J1 Visa

If you are visiting to the US on a J1 or J2 visa, you will be required to enroll medical health insurance for the full duration of your program. Many sponsor programs such as exchange scholar programs via CSC(China Scholarship Council) or research institutions, exchange student programs via university, may provide both J1 and J2 holders with health insurance, or you will be required to enroll in a private health insurance plan. The US Department of State requires all J visa holders(as well as J2 visa holders) will cover a health insurance to meet this new level of coverage on May 15th 2015, the minimum health insurance requirements that your insurance plan must meet:

  • Medical Benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
  • Repatriation of Remains in the amount of $25,000
  • Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of$50,000
  • Deductible that dose not exceed $500 per accident or illness
  • an A.M. Best rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
  • A policy underwritten by an insurance carrier with:
    • an A.M. Best rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
    • a McGraw Hill Financial/Standard & Poor’s Claims paying Ability rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
    • a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of ‘‘B+’’ or above;
    • a Fitch Ratings, Inc. rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
    • o a Moody’s Investor Services rating of ‘‘A3’’ or above;

Importantly,you need to confirmed with the exchange student program that if you need to buy their group insurance plan ,or whether you need to arrange an independent overseas student health insurance.
