Compare with Blue 90 & 100
The Blue plan comes in three tiers by coinsurance level — Blue 80 (80%), Blue 90 (90%), Blue 100 (100%). All three share identical covered benefits, caps, and exclusions; only the coinsurance rate, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum (OOPM) differ. U.S. network is Aetna throughout.
Blue 80: The lowest-premium tier. The insurer pays 80% of claims (you pay 20%), with the highest deductible and OOPM. Best for students prioritizing a lower premium.
Blue 90: The middle tier. The insurer pays 90% (you pay 10%), with a mid-level deductible and OOPM. A balance of premium and coverage.
Blue 100: The top tier. After the deductible, the insurer pays 100% of In-Network claims, so your out-of-pocket cost is lowest. With the lowest deductible ($0) and OOPM, it suits students wanting predictable costs.

How to choose a tier — important: All three tiers share identical covered benefits, caps, and exclusions; only the coinsurance rate, deductible, and OOPM differ. A higher payout (80→100) means a higher premium but lower out-of-pocket cost per claim. Out-of-network is 70% for all three tiers.
Out-of-network OOPM is 2× the In-Network figure ($14,000 / $12,000 / $10,000).
Common: all four plans use the U.S. Aetna network, are issued by Spectrum Life, and use Global Reach Rx network pharmacies for prescriptions.
This table summarizes the Schedule of Benefits; final contract terms follow the official policy document.

WHAT MAKES INSURANCE REASONABLE?
Best price &
coverage match
Hi! I'm DIANai 🙌
Good insurance isn’t the priciest —
it’s the one where
price and benefits stay balanced.
⚖️ Blue 80 hits the "efficient zone"
You take on a little of the small risk, and in return you save for sure on premium.

−$300 |
The plan in the "best cost-efficiency zone" — the lightest load for both you and the insurer.
🧮 What if you claim $200?
Follow a small-bill case and you'll see why it's win-win.
| 🧾 |
A $200 bill comes up → it's within the deductible ($500), so you just pay $200 and you're done. |
| 🏢 |
The insurer never has to process a small claim, so there's no claims-handling cost. |
| 😊 |
You spend $200 of your $300 saved premium and still keep $100. |
🤝 Insurer 👍 + You 👍 = win-win
| 💉 |
Preventive benefits — vaccines, immunizations, check-ups — are covered right away with no deductible. They’re separate from your first $500, so no worries! |
🔍 How to compare look-alike plans
Go in order and the truly reasonable plan shows up.
| 1 |
Group by the same price
First pick a few plans with similar premiums and compare them on the same line.
|
| 2 |
Whose deductible is lower
At the same premium, the one with the lower upfront deductible wins.
|
| 3 |
Is the copay fair?
School group plans usually run $20–30 for an office visit. Use that as your benchmark — and check the Urgent care copay too.
Benchmark: office visit $20–30 |
| 4 |
Prescriptions — copay or coinsurance?
School group plans typically charge Tier 1/2/3/4 = $10/$40/$60/$100 copay, and ~30% coinsurance out-of-network. Tier 1 is ~90% of claims by count, but Tier 2/3/4 make up 90% of drug cost — so check the Tier 2·3 share.
Key: Tier 2·3 cost |
| 5 |
Check the exclusions
Finally, make sure a very common benefit isn't quietly listed as an exclusion.
|
⚠️ A "partner plan" that costs more?
Be careful with plans charging $200 more for similar benefits.
If a premium is higher, your out-of-pocket should be lower to be comparable. If the benefits match Blue 80 but the premium is hundreds more, it isn’t the same comparison.
Drop that plan’s premium by $200 and its deductible likely climbs to about $900 — so it’s hard to call it an equal plan.
A smart choice — Blue 80
