J1 Purple / Purple+ / Yellow Comparison

All three J-visa tiers share the same chassis — issued by Spectrum Life / Ocean Re, administered by Redbridge, on the Aetna PPO network with Global Reach Rx pharmacy — and each meets the U.S. Department of State's J-1 minimums under 22 CFR §62.14. The tiers differ by deductible, coinsurance, benefit maximum, and pre-existing wait; only Yellow adds vaccines, preventive care, and maternity.

J1 Purple: The entry tier. Meets every J-1 federal minimum at the lowest premium — $100,000 maximum, a $500 deductible, and 80% in-network coinsurance. Best for price-sensitive students.

J1 Purple Plus: Same coverage structure as Purple, but the deductible is halved to $250 and the pre-existing wait drops to 6 months. A small step up that noticeably improves out-of-pocket experience.

J1 Yellow: The top tier. $0 deductible, 100% in-network coinsurance, a $250,000 maximum, plus vaccines & immunizations, preventive care, and maternity ($5,000) — the choice for family-accompanied J-1s and students prioritizing coverage.

💉 Vaccines & immunizations — many U.S. schools require proof of MMR, meningitis, TB and other immunizations before enrollment. Only J1 Yellow covers them (in-network 100%, up to $250); Purple and Purple Plus do not.
